6/21/2023 0 Comments Eragon eldestI was beyond frustrated to find the trope of a magically cured disease existed in this book, that the flowery, try-hard prose-and the lackluster narration-as well as the teenage mooning had gotten even worse in this novel, the events non-realistic, and the switching of point-of-views annoying. It took me about two weeks to claw my way through Eldest. I remembered Eldest as being even better than the first book in The Inheritance Cycle, Eragon, but that was not the case. Will the king's dark hand strangle all resistance? Eragon may not escape with even his life. Meanwhile, his cousin Roran must fight a new battle back home in Carvahall – one that puts Eragon in even graver danger. But chaos and betrayal plague him at every turn, and Eragon isn't sure whom he can trust. It is the journey of a lifetime, filled with awe-inspring new places and people, each day a fresh adventure. Now Eragon must travel to Ellesméra, land of the elves, for further training in magic and swordsmanship, the vital skills of the Dragon Rider. Evil reigns.Įragon and his dragon, Saphira, have just saved the rebel state from destruction by the mighty forces of King Galbatorix, cruel ruler of the Empire. As Coade struggles with overlapping memories of past expeditions, he slowly realizes that the stories he's telling obscure the real crisis: an alien space probe has crashed into a subterranean ocean and has captured the human members of a team trying to explore that ocean. After another death, he's on a dirigible entering the Hollow Earth through a crater in Antarctica. But then the same narrator is on a steamship a century later looking for a fissure off the coast of South America. Narrator Silas Coade, an anxious young assistant surgeon, starts the novel on a little sloop sailing up the coast of Norway in the 1800s, searching for a fissure in the cliffs said to contain a mysterious "Edifice." Along the way, Coade dies. Much of the fun in this vigorous space opera from Reynolds (Terminal World) comes from figuring out the tricks of the twisty plot. Some member groups of the Peacemakers organized funds to aid war resisters and people in the civil rights movement who had suffered reprisals. It had no national office, paid staff, or membership list. The Peacemakers differed from other pacifist and nonviolent resistance organizations in their emphasis on small-scale, local, "cell-based" organizations and intentional communities. Peacemakers aimed to advocate nonviolent resistance in the service of peace. The Peacemakers were social anarchists whose organizational beliefs are largely attributed to Marxist philosophy. The name “Peacemakers” was taken from a section of the Bible, the Beatitudes or Sermon on the Mount: "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God." The group’s organizational structure adopted a multidivisional organizational structure with a loose hierarchy, prioritizing local committees including but not limited to the Tax Refusal and Military Draft Refusal Committee. Ernest and Marion Bromley and Juanita and Wally Nelson largely organized the group. Peacemakers was an American pacifist organization founded following a conference on "More Disciplined and Revolutionary Pacifist Activity" in Chicago in July 1948. Make no mistake, this is a book that is not afraid to come down squarely on one side in the most meaningful debate of the 21st century: what’s the point of reading? As the world colludes to hasten the art of writing into dusty archives of history, The Eyre Affair is something of a manifesto demanding that people start paying attention to the essential quality of literature in their lives before it goes away forever, replaced by memes, emoticons, emojis, snapchatting, tumblrizing and facebooking. Still, many elements need to find their way back to showcase the real deadly powers behind everything that happens in Star Wars. Years later, many of these concepts have been slowly introduced back in Star Wars lore. A costly mistake has enraged many fans who criticize the misguided notions of Kathleen Kennedy, who blatantly declared there were no guidelines to dictate the franchise's future. Much of the expanded universe has been deemed non-canon after Disney acquired Lucasfilm. The past, the present, and the future in Star Wars are defined by incredibly powerful characters dictating the destiny of races, planets, or galaxies to their whim. Beyond the established lore lies an expanded universe crafted with Lucas's express authorization that explored the deepest parts of the faraway galaxy. The 1977 epic spawned eight more sequels and numerous TV shows. George Lucas had no idea how big Star Wars would be. 6/20/2023 0 Comments The road mccarthy bookWhen the story opens, “the man” and “the boy” (we never learn their names) are traveling south on a road, trying to reach the coast. That’s the great thing about a reading challenge – it can get you out of your comfort zone! I had been hesitant about reading The Road because of its subject matter and reputation, but I’m so glad I finally got over my angst. March’s challenge was to read a book by an Irish-American author in honor of Irish-American Heritage Month. I read The Road as part of the 2022 Thoughtful Reading Challenge.
